At least there's something I can agree with him about!

Not to get political here, but I found humor in this Yahoo! news clipping.

I now return to my opposing political viewpoints.

The shelves - they are a-changing

Ok, forgive my failed attempt at a title. I was shopping with Kyra today at Shopko while Ian was at skateboard camp. They have their summer patio stuff on clearance already and I noticed they are starting to put up the aisles for school supplies. It seems hard to believe that Ian has been out of school for almost a month already. June has just flown by for us.

After finishing up at Shopko (and the Dollar Store - because you know you can't distract little Miss You-Know-Who from that toddler paradise!), we headed over to Hobby Lobby because they had some wall hangings on sale that I want for the newly painted bathroom. Kyra made the comment as soon as we entered "Where are the Christmas trees?" She got great joy from the Christmas tree display there last year. I told her that it was too early for the trees but as I walked a couple of aisles in, I noticed they are already stocking the shelves with ornaments! This is JUNE, people!

I remember when . . .

Saturday meant sleeping in. Of course that was before kids where "sleeping in" now means maybe sleeping until 7:00 or 7:30ish. So, why is it that even when I can sleep in, I choose not to?

On Thursday evening, we went for a walk to the lighthouse. Ian wanted me to "race" him on the breakwall. I wasn't wearing my good shoes and I ended up tweaking my glut/hammy a bit so when the alarm rang on Friday, I just wasn't feeling up to my morning run (and, admittedly, I was way too comfortable underneath my covers). I ended up walking with the kids to the park yesterday which was a couple of miles round trip, so I did at least get some exercise. Still, I have to admit I felt "guilty" sleeping through that morning run.

Since we rented a movie last night, I told Rich I would take it back today. Yep, I got up at 6:30 and decisively chose to run it back - literally. Not only did it erase my guilt from yesterday, it was a wonderfully mind-clearing run. Now, if only I could convince myself that I can still sleep in and do the same!

Another reminder that I am getting old

Yesterday at Ian's birthday party, it was time for the cake and singing of happy birthday. Apparently, the number of candles you leave lit when you make your wish is the number of girlfriends you have (Ian has 2 if this is to be believed). Has anyone else ever heard of this? Either I am (a) living under a rock, (b) reaching a new age of pre-teen motherhood or (c)getting old!

I hope I can do that one day!

Monday through Friday, I wake up at an obscene hour (5:00 a.m.) to haul myself to the Y for some exercise. There are many days where it's just all too appealing to stay beneath the warm covers and sleep in, but I know that if I don't go, I'll end up sleeping in more than I end up working out so I press on.

Anyhow, every morning there is a group of "senior" women who arrive at the Y before I get there and are swimming laps. They then take their coffee in the women's lounge afterward and swap stories about days gone by. It's really fascinating to hear them talk.

Yesterday as I was leaving, one of these ladies was getting ready to go out to her car but it was slick so I offered to help her to her car. She was very appreciative and in the short walk to the car she told me how she had also shoveled her walks that morning. I only hope that one day when I am her age I have the wearwithall and ambition to not only get up and shovel 4 inches of snow BEFORE coming to the gym and exercising at 5:00 a.m.! Truly inspiring!

Another game of tag!

One of my fellow LMers (Mandi) has tagged me. (For those of you who have been living under a rock, LM is pretty much my "home" on the WWW). Anyhow, here are the rules:

1-Link to your tagger (see above), and also post these rules on your blog. They are right here!

2-Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.

3-Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.

4- Let them know they are TAGGED by leaving a comment on their blog.

So, here are my 7 facts:

1. I am having a professional bra fitting next week and I am ecstatic about it!
2. I have never seen The Sound of Music (either the movie or the play)
3. Is anyone else bothered that Dora the Explorer's and Go! Diego! Go!'s mothers let them roam through jungles by themselves?
4. I once saw Tiffany in concert.
5. I do not have a "proven" pelvis (and my OB told me so!)
6. I cannot transfer wet sweaters to the dryer by myself.
7. I always wanted to be a nurse until I realized I could not stand the sight of blood.

Now, I am going to tag: Angie, JenniB, Stephanie, Arlyn, and Susan

When did my vocabulary change?

I called Ian to dinner the other day and I realized that during my childhood, it was already referred to as supper. What's more, when I was growing up, coke and other carbonated drinks were "pop"; I now refer to them as "soda". When did I change these things and why?

Do you remember?

Yesterday we got a catalog in the mail from an educational toy place. I flipped through it marking several pages for cool gift ideas, but it really made me think back to one of the most joyous annual days of my childhood - the arrival of the Sears Wishbook! Oh, how we would fight over that catalog! Page after page of toys and gizmos so we could start making our lists. Today's catalogs just pale in comparison!

Is this really appropriate?

Since I have been on my weight loss journey, I have become a "walker" in the early mornings. I really like it even though I have to get up at the crack of dawn to do it. I have a set "route" that I take but I alterante the direction I take each day (mostly due to the fact that there is a nasty hill and I can't imagine going up that sucker every day!)

Anyhow, I will get to my point. When I walk, I stay on the public streets/sidewalks. Tonight, as I was driving back from dinner with the kids, we passed the local cemetery and lo and behold, there are two women POWER WALKING through the cemetery! It just really bothered me. While I realize that there are paved pathways throughout, I hardly find it appropriate to speed walk through the final resting places of so many. Does this strike you as an odd place to exercise?

A nice way to start the day

I have to admit, when I got the crazy idea to get up and walk before the kids were up and going, I didn't know how long it would last. Then, I missed a couple of days last week because Rich went out of town and I found that even though I didn't have to get up, I got up anyway and kind of missed those 45 minutes of quiet time.

Anyhow, it was very humid here yesterday. In fact, when they showed our city on the map on the "dew point" index, ours was the only city in the area in the "oppressive" category. This morning though, it wasn't too bad, but you could tell it was still humid - so humid, that if you looked up in the clouds as you were heading east toward the lake, there was the tiniest sliver of a rainbow. It really energized me and made me give thanks to God for allowing me the opportunity to start another great day!

Random Musing

Why is it that we wait so long to have children but once they are born, we can't wait for them to take naps?
