My Slugger

Ian has had a grand total of two baseball games now. Last night though, after much anticipation, he got his first hit! And, it wasn't just a tap either. He really walloped the ball into center field and got a stand-up double. He's just beaming still!

A Contact Sport?

Proving that I am really behind the times, I received a call from the school health assistant this afternoon. Apparently Ian was involved in a playground "altercation" (to which he was not the aggressor). He fell down and hit his head and has a slight bump. I was glad the school called to inform me and Ms. A felt that he was acting fine and was back at class.

When Ian came home, I asked him what happened and he told me he got knocked down getting someone "out" in a game but he was feeling better. I figured it was dodgeball or something like that. No, further proving how "old fashioned" I am, apparently these days, four-square is a contact sport! Lord, please help me!

Not liking this time difference!

Yes, I every four years, I become an Olympic geek. I'm not really one for the winter games, but I really love the summer games. Of course, last night I had to stay up and watch the all-around in women's gynastics. Go USA! but man I am so not liking being awake today. We've had a pretty lazy morning to say the least!

An easy treat

Rich signed us up to bring the treat for Ian's baseball game last night. He figured it was better to get it out of the way early. I don't know why, but I have "anxiety" about being the treat-giver. I know it's silly because kids will pretty much eat anything you put in their hands that comes in snack-pack form. That being said, I don't like sending kids home on sugar highs after the game. I asked Ian what he would like to give and his response was "some sort of cheese crackers and a drink". Easy enough - I was off to Wal-Mart and then I saw the bunches of bananas. Simple and healthy! I did end up getting the Ritz bits cheese crackers as well, but the boys loved the idea of bananas and couldn't get enough of them - glad I brought extra!

One under his belt

Yesterday, Ian got the opportunity to bowl in his first tournament in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. I don't know where he finished in the grand scheme of things because I know absolutely nothing about handicaps in bowling and such, but we were very proud of Ian as he bowled three great games and wound up averaging 20 pins above his average. Not bad for his first year bowling without bumpers!

Now that was a throwback!

Today we had Ian's birthday party at the local roller rink. YES! They still do exist in some parts of the country complete with those gaudy tan rental skates with orange wheels! Of course, there's a lot of in-line skaters too, but for the most part, everyone was wearing traditional roller skates. The music has changed a bit too. I mean, there's something missing when they play Crazy Frog's version of "We Are the Champions" rather than Queen's. I should have requested "Another One Bites the Dust" for old time's sake.

Everyone in our family donned a pair of skates - including Kyra! I was amazed at how well she took to the skates. Her favorite part was actually "falling" while one of us held her hand. By the end of the session though, she was able to move around the rink without hanging on to either of us (though we did follow closely behind her to make sure no one ran her over).

Ian loved the party even though he had a couple of hard crashes. He thought it was his best birthday party EVER!

Cheaters never win

Wow! I am so glad Kyra is a sound sleeper because there was some serious hootin' and hollerin' going on at this house last night! I can't say that I was excited at the prospect of this year's Superbowl. I think it's the least excited I've been in recent memory. Still, I held out hope that the Giants would at least make it as competitive as the final game of the season because I just flat-out don't like the Patriots and all the "undefeated season" talk was wearing on me shortly after the Colts lost to the Patriots. I think what gets to me the most is that the league turned their head to serious allegations of cheating by the Patriots. I really take issue with an organization that allows their head coach to conduct himself in such an arrogant manner. So, the Giants get the last laugh and all is right in my football universe.

It's that time of year again!

Ah the phenomenon of mid March! That magical time of year when all office productivity comes to a screeching halt while everyone from the office sports guru to the athletically unaware plunk down $5 in hopes of picking the perfect brackets. After years of participating in bracket pools, I am convinced that no matter how much I agonize over my picks, I will never win one of these pools because I simply overthink everything - or - since I don't really follow college basketball that closely, I rely on past performances even though those teams no longer exist. So, this year I am going to try an experiement and make my brackets based on the flip of a coin. Who knows, maybe I'll do far better this year!
